Robotic BELAZ dump truck: field trials

Improvement of mining productivity, safety and efficiency by means of implementation of robotic equipment is one of the top priorities of OJSC «BELAZ».

At present two robotic BELAZ-7513R dump trucks undergo field trials in Khakassia in Abakanskiy Mine (SUEK). 130-ton robot units were supplied there in the beginning of 2019. Commissioning ceremony is expected in August.

First remote-control BELAZ mining dump truck was designed at OJSC «BELAZ» together with JSC «VIST Group» (part of Zyfra Company) in 2010. The main feature was a distant working place of the operator, totally resembling the driver’s cab. It was an important stage on the way of creation of robotic mining dump truck.
In 2018 BELAZ and VIST Group finished the adaptation cycle of works for autonomous movement of robotic BELAZ-7513R dump truck on the plant testing area.

Robotic BELAZ-7513R trucks, which are under testing in Khakassia, have a number of principle features giving benefits comparing to earlier samples, such as intelligent control systems of new generation:

✔ Electric hydraulic system of steering and brakes with electronic control provides more flexibility and space saving design, optimum control features, interaction between steering wheel and slave hydraulic cylinders, brake pedal and brake gears;
✔ System of thorough scanning for detailed environment evaluation;
✔ Shuttle mode decreases tires wearing and route time up to 12% due to absence of turnings.

Design and production of robotic vehicles are performed within the promising Mining Project «Intelligent Mine».

BELAZ is planning to establish maximum automatic loading works by involving BELAZ-78250 Loader in the technological process. This loader is able to simulate a 3D-model of rock intended for loading, to determine the action order and correlate its movement with dump truck position. Functions of operator controlling the truck in remote mode will be reduced and he is only to give instructions in the beginning of operation and perform some additional actions in emergency cases. Such system allows using only one operator for three or five robotic vehicles.

It can be operated in command, remote and autonomous modes as a part of robotic mining complex. Depending on specific gravity of transported cargo the maximum efficiency can be achieved when operating with excavators and loaders with bucket capacity of 12–20 m³. Front-end Loader - BELAZ-78250
BELAZ-78250 front-end loader is designed for mechanical loading operations in mines, on railway stations and other companies for bulk cargo loading (crushed stone, sand, gravel, rock, ground and so on) into mining dump trucks, railway gondola cars, hopper wagons and other transport vehicles with body side height up to 4,8m. Thanks to implementation of electronic control system developed by BELAZ for working equipment and steering BELAZ-78250 front-end loader can operate in command and remote modes. It can be considered as an optimum variant for creation of robotic complexes.
